The 30-40 is a rimmed cartridge, with a base diameter, somthing like .070+ larger than the 30-06. Likely the bolt face and extractor wouldn't work for 30-06? I'm not familiar with it? But perhaps you would need a 30-06 bolt, extractor, ejector etc. To make it work?

I have wanted to do a take down 95 in 30-40 Ackley improved. Less bolt thrust.

Bolt swap and headspace, magazine interruptor work, re chamber/ re barrel, rimmed versus non, and the list gets bigger as the real gunsmiths chime in. Not sure if I understand your goal or for that matter understand why you wouldn't just horse trade a '95 in 30-06?

    Not worth the effort.

Shoulder diameter of 30-06 is .441" vs. .423 for the 30-40

Base diameter of 30-06 is .471 vs. .457 for the 30-40

Case length of 30-06 is 2.490 vs. 2.314 for the 30-40

OAL of 30-06 is 3.34 vs. 3.01 for the 30-40.

Definitely would need to re-chamber the rifle and would probably have to modify the magazine (if even possible) in addition to replacing the bolt.

Forget the 30-40 and go with a 30-06 from the factory.

OTOH, the 30-40 is a lot nicer to shoot from the 1895 than is the 30-06.

It is easier to convert it to a 35 Winchester, but it would not be easy to feed.

Ok thanks one and all, I guess I will just pony up the extra money and get one in 30-06.
