is it legal to put a stock on a pistol to make it a carbine

The resulting firearm must have an over all length no less than 26 inches and it must have a barrel no shorter than 16 inches. Go below those minimums and you have a National Firearms Act weapon, and the issues.

There are a few exemptions for certain Curio and Relics, but you made no mention of the type of pistol you are inquiring about.

If you have the money and time to obtain a Federal license. For what they refer to, as a short barreled rifle. It's possible to legally have a pistol with a attachable shoulder stock.

I believe the cost of the license is still $200. The waiting period before you get the license. Might be between 6 & 10 months though.

There are a number of military Pistols that can legally have a shoulder stock. Know of at least 3 . I happen to have one of each. Certain Lugers . Some Broom Handle Mausers and some browning HP. and the very rare Colt model 1905

I think he is referring to the stocks that turn glocks and 1911s into rifles. yes, they are 100% legal.

There's also the new "arm braces" that look just like a stock and can be shoulder fired. You can attach them to pistol versions of AR & AK's. Makes them look like Short Barrel Rifles without having to pay the NFA tax & waiting period for an SBR. If you do install them under no circumstances should you remove the velcro strap. Goofy ATF rules.

    In general, *NO*.

If you were to just take an ordinary Glock or 1911 and put a stock on it, you'd be in possession of a Federally illegal "short barreled rifle" and you can get in a lot of trouble for having that.

You can legally attach stocks onto handguns in certain VERY SPECIFIC circumstances:

    1. If the gun is one of the very rare BATFE approved military guns where a stock is OK (examples depicted above in this thread).

    2. If, WHEN you put the stock on the pistol, you ALSO put a 16" or longer barrel on, AND the overall gun is over 26" long. In other words, you're effectively converting the pistol ENTIRELY into a "real" rifle (not just a pistol with stock). This is the specific circumstance Mark Christian is referring to.

    3. If you register the gun as an NFA gun, requiring Federal paperwork and tax fees.

    4. I believe its OK to put a stock on a BLACK POWDER handgun, like a Civil war era replica black powder revolver. Obviously, its OK to do this on airguns, paintball guns, crossbows, and other non-firearm guns.

And note that State law can vary. So even though these things may be legal under FEDERAL law, your local law may still prohibit them.
