Japan used Tanegashima Match Locks until the 1860's. Various Western built percussion rifles, then came into use. Modern firearms weren't actually manufactured in Japan until the 1870's.

My guess your Sharps was sold to Japan, sometime after the mid 1860's.

Get hold of Honeycutt's book, "Military Rifles of Japan". For more indepth enlightenment.

    EDIT #1,

The marking "RSL" on the barrel. Are the initials of Robert S. Lamotte. He was a the military officer/inspector, at Sharps between 1861 & 69. According to my reference.

Nice looking Sharps. What sort of documentation does it have?

When Christian Cranmer of IMA purchased the arsenal contents from Nepal, the original Sharps factory tooling was in the inventory.
