Winchester model 42 high serial number

I just acquired a model 42 with serial number 16257x. Gun is field grade, 26inch mod choke. I assume it was made in 1963, but why is the serial higher than any of the online serial number lookup tables. Does anyone know what the highest serial number is for a model 42? Did I get the last one made?

    I don't know anything, about the shotgun? A lot of the available Winchester serial number data, that's available online. Is based on the research, done by the late George Madis. Burt who is one of our mods, feels Madis's research and data is suspect. That might be what is behind, the discrepancy in your serial number?

    Actually, it is per my research. I was the one who wrote and developed all of the data in the Chapter 8 tables. Speaking of which, Chapter 8 is being updated with newly acquired data for several models and will be available in the 4th edition which will be published this coming January 2015.

    In regards to the comment about my disagreement with George Madis' published DOM/serial number information, that is a true statement. It is also a fact that his published DOM information is inaccurate, and in some cases, it is grossly inaccurate.

    Serial number 162570 was manufactured in January 1962.

    Bert..thank you so much for adding the date. I wasn't sure if you were into Winchester shotguns as much as you are for rifles. Here I thought it was made in 1963 because it was higher than the online lists, and that wasn't even the right year. Thanks again.
