410 question - Stevens
I picked up what looks like a well worn Stevens .410 SXS shotgun. I do not see a model number on it anywhere. On the left side of the receiver there appears to be what is left of a stamped duck. It does have matching serial numbers on the barrel and forearm, H 37373. I have not de-stocked the receiver to see if there are serial numbers on it that aren't easily visable.
The barrels are marked .410, no mention of chamber length. Does this mean this shotgun was intended for 2 1/2" shells? Also the LOP looks like it was made for a "youth", are replacement stocks available? If so where would be a good place to check. Thanks for your help. Robin
EDIT: Would anyone know what model this might be from the serial number? Any idea
on the date it was manufactured. Thanks again for any information
Edit: a local gun shop look this over and told me the 410 was definitely made for the 2 1/2" shells probably made in the late 1920's or 1930's. He didn't look it up in a book so I don't know how he knew the age. He did say it appeared safe to shoot with the right shells. The stock looks original but has a lop of about 12". For little guys or boys

Robin,
It could be a STEVENS 311. Searching the GunBroker auctions, for "stevens 410", under the category "All>Firearms>Shotguns>Double Barrel Shotguns>Side By Side Shotguns", I find a few that sound like yours. Some were manufactured for other companies, and carry such names as:
WARDS/STEVENS 311 410 SXS WARDS MODEL HERCULES 50 Ranger Stevens
Without any other information, your shotgun could have been built for just about any retailer.
