Hello,
I have come across several Model 1892 (and other Models) rifles marked as you describe. Apparently this was done at the factory when a rifle was returned and the serial number was illegible. I have seen one rifle on which a "serial number" was stamped on the side of the lower tang, and the bottom of the receiver stamped WRACO. The tang SN matched the correct configuration as listed in the factory ledgers. It would be interesting to know if there is a number on the lower tang of the gun you saw. Do you have any contact info for the owner?
