Remington 597 .17HMR Semi-Auto
Looking for opinions here.. A couple years ago I was in my local Cabalas and I couldn't believe I saw this rifle for sale in the used gun rack. It even had a nickel Nikon scope to go along with it. At the time Cabalas was running a special on their used firearms and along with my military discount, I was able to pick it up for $288 out the door. I had heard about the problems with them blowing up. Some say bad extractors, dirty chambers, bad mags and the list goes on. I have also read where some people have shots hundreds and sometimes a few thousand rounds without any trouble. This particular rifle looked immaculate. Really hadn't been shot at all.. Anyways what I would like to know from the experts is should I hold on to it. I personally have shot close to 150 rds and not so much as 1 jam or failure to feed. Since Remington stopped making them years back and most of them have been turned in, it may be worth holding on to. Not sure which company but there is a lever action that was made for only 1 year that has gone up like crazy. So someone talk me out of selling it because I got an offer to buy it for $650.. Sell it or hold on to it???? Thanks

Hard to tell what to do in your case. You could more than double your money with the current offer. Some future date it might go way up. Do you need the money, something cheaper or perhaps more durable to shoot? If they quit making them there usually a good reason? You likely will not loose money if it became a safe queen.
Being a reloader and a shooter I have no use for any of the rim fires except the standard 22 LR. and I don't shoot them very often. The 222 with cast bullets is cheaper to shoot and often hits harder, plus I have the option for jacketed bullets.0 -

I do think these will continue to appreciate, and no, you won't do wrong just keeping it. **BUT**. . .
Looking at recently completed auctions on this website, true market value of .17 Remington 597s seems to be about $425, with recent sales ranging from $380-460.
Does the offer you got include the scope? That potentially makes a big difference. The cheapest rimfire Nikon scopes go for around $110 new, and they go up (considerably) from there. So you'd have to figure out which model you have, what its worth, and factor that in.
But IMO, if the offer does NOT include the scope, you could probably pocket the $650, then go right around and buy another one of these for under $500 (plus shipping and transfer cost), and perhaps well under, leaving you ahead of the game.
If this is a gun you have no intention of using, I'd probably take the offer. $650 in the hand now is probably worth more than the gun in the safe worth $650 several years down the road.0 -
I would sell it and purchase a replacement you can reload. the ammo sooner not later this cartridge will lose it's supporters and die.
EDITnot to kick a dead horse but when was the lasT REMINGTON AUTO loaded OR 5MM how long between when that was dropped to when you could by newly made ammo ? 25 Rimfire 30 Rimfire 32 short & Long rimfire ETC ETC[?][?] I am not saying this ONLY happens to rimfire cartridges but with centerfire You can stock up on Cases or modify other cases SS MAGS You may even be able to rechamber
old barrel rimfire has to have same rim diameter0 -
Personally I would have half of it on my breath, and a rubber band around the other half. Just kidding! Considering the cost of shipping and FFL fees. It would take a couple of hundred in profit to make me consider selling, since one hundred is just not enough to justify my time spent on replacement/re-investment trouble. I usually only sell to upgrade or invest in other arms. The 597 in 17-HMR can be found for 425-to-500 range not including the a fore mentioned shipping and fees. With the cost of rem-fire ammo today, when you can find it, I can shoot center-fire reloads cheaper. I would be surprised if you get another offer for 650.00. I would try to keep the scope, then it would be a no-brainier. 0 0 -

Just like all those other obsolete rimfire cartridges that have been poo-pooed, badmouthed, and...wait a second; hasn't a less-powerful, more universally-known, "wimpy" rimfire been around forever? Don't some ammo makers occasionally do special runs of a few million rounds every so often? How many times have I heard that this or that rimfire will be discontinued, or dropped from so-n-so's line due to miniscule market share?
Of course, I'm talking about the .22WRF that ONLY fits 1-2 models; not a round like the 17hmr, which fits pistols, rifles, lever actions, etc., and Henry just announced a newer model for it.0 -

The gun industry has gone like the mass marketers have done with the food industry.
Offer a product that sells well, then super size it, down size it,
re=package it.
Not to make it "better", just to offer it in more ways to the consumer.
Like the basic Oreo cookie.....now available in "double stuffed",
"minis" and "large size".0 -
