9MM Federal Pit Bull

The Charter Arms revolver was made specifically, for the rimmed Federal 9mm revolver cartridges. As best as I can remember, (it's been 25 years). There was no provision for using convention 9mm, using one of the "moon clips".

Because of the problems of misguided folks. Using the Federal rimmed 9mm ammo. In old black powder revolvers, chambered for the 38 S & W. Both the production of the revolvers, and rimed 9mm ammo. Was stopped almost immediately. Likewise production of 5 shot moon clips, never materialized. Because the same idiots would be trying to use them. In the old black powder, top break, revolvers.

I don't think clips will work in the 9mm Federal.

The .45 1917 was made with rear cylinder clearance for the rim thickness of the .45 ACP case plus the thickness of the clip.
When Peters came out with the .45 Auto Rim, they made it with a thick rim to headspace properly. .090" instead of .060"

But the 9mm Federal has a standard rim thickness, too close to .38 S&W for comfort as rufe says. It isn't a 9mm Auto Rim. There isn't room for a clip like a Ruger SP101 uses.

I have READ that you can load it with 9mm P, which will headspace with the case mouth against the chamber mouth like in an auto. Have to poke the empties out with a stick or pluck them out with your fingernails, though.

Thank you all. I am a little familiar with what was written. The moon clip idea came from a fore sale ad that said that the ejector star(wrong term) on these pistols were cut so that moon clips with regular 9mm would work. Mine appears(?) to be cut out fore this. It appears that I may have to have some moons made.
I like odd calibers so I will be reloading.

I never liked 1/2 moon clips, PIA in IMHO. I doubt I would like full moon clips any better. And why are they clips, they load cylinders not magazines.

I think I'd make brass out of 38 Special. If yours will only work with "clips" I'd make them from some wide banding material using an appropriate size hole saw, then drill the holes on the radial layout, perhaps the star cutout first.

Added If you look at the picture posted by BigLoop22, you will notice the extractor is cut away where it would have engaged the alignment pins sticking out of the cylinder. Without the moon clips being present and engaging the pins I'd bet money the pistol is a lead spitter. You can see the loose fit between the cylinder and the extractor rod. The manufactured clips will require 5 locating holes IMHO and that cut on the extractor needs to be beveled to also push the clip out and still allow the clip to fit with a mating bevel.

Making custom clips will be expensive.
See if you can get a sample of clips for Ruger Sp-101 and S&W 940.

    Mike,

A couple of weeks ago, someone on "fleabay" (major auction site) was selling a 5-shot, 9MM Federal, Charter Pitbull cylinder that he cut for standard, 9mm Luger moon clips. He wanted around $100.00 for the entire cylinder assembly. The ejector had been ground down, so that it no longer looks like a star. Here is a photograph, from that auction:

What I need is moon clips so I can use 9mm as well. Does anyone know if other 9mm 5 shot revolver moon clips will work and/or where can I get Charter Arms moon clips?
    Thanks, Mike

As already mentioned, I don't think other 9mm clips will work for this, at least not without modification.

Though, at only $10 for a pack of 5, its lot like trying them is too demanding on your wallet: http://www.midwayusa.com/product/593950/ranch-full-moon-clip-9mm-luger-5-round-blue-package-of-8

Taurus "stellar" clips are also about $9/5 pack.

If you only want one to try, you get these directly from Smith for under $2 each, though you'll have to pay shipping.

You're unlikely to get any help from Charter arms. Its been through several "incarnations" over the last 40+ years, and I don't think the current company offers moon clips at all.

Charter does now offer a clipless 9mm luger snubnose 5 shot revolver, which is basically the modern version of the 9mm Federal gun you've got, only with a proprietary ejection system to use ordinary 9mm luger rounds. Gun is moderately priced.

So if you're really interested in a 9mm Charter snubnose, rather than messing with custom moonclips and/or custom gun modification, maybe it makes more sense to swap your older 9mm Federal for a newer 9mm luger? You can probably pick one up for under $450; if you can get $350 for your 9mm Federal gun, I'd say the extra $100 out of pocket is well worth not having to mess with custom-made cartridges/reloads, or having to have your current gun custom altered to accept clips.
