M1 Garand Help
I'm thinking about buying a MI Grand through the CMP program. I'm wondering how good of shape these rifles really are. I was thinking about buying a rack grade springfield or even a Danish with the VAR Barrel in the Winchester. So I'm just wondering what peoples past experiences are from buying from The CMP Program. Is it worth driving there and picking out your own or just order by the phone and get what they give ya. Any input in this will be greatly appreiciated. Email is rjb@30below.com

I want to buy a m1 garand to target shoot. I dont want to spend alot on it and know nothing about them. I did inherit 80, yes 80 cans of ammo for it. Its 3006 ammo. I want something that I have to fix up a little. I want to spend under 800 for it. What do I look for and is there a certian model??? Thanks for any help. Oakie. 0 -
If it's a Underwood, it's a Carbine. Sight unseen, we can't really help you. If you can't provide quality close up photos. All you can do is to give us a rundown on all the markings. Barrel,Stock,Receiver etc. 0 -
M1 Rifles (Garands) were made by Springfield Armory, Winchester, Harrington and Richardson and International Harvester. There are no Underwood M1 Rifles, although there are Underwood M1 Carbines. 0 -
Google both rifles and look at the pic's, a glance at the magazine area will tell them apart.
Some folks really like the carbines, the ones I shot were not impressive.
I like a M1 Garand a lot, except for packing it around. Slicked up and with a good barrel they can shoot better than most people can hold them.0 -
Guys, thanks for the assistance. After doing a little research the guy called me today and it is a carbine. Thankfully I have some idea what to look for on those. If I get bogged down I'll take some photos and post them here. 0 -
Carbines are nice little weapons and are actually great for home defense. They were very popular in WWII with our guys as they were light and handy and although the .30 round they fire is not in the league of the 30-06 of the Garand, it is certainly more powerful than most pistol rounds. And they have risen in price lately particularly for those that are complete and have not be messed with. I have several and love to shoot them. To give you some idea as to value, as the guys say we would need to see photos but I would not let any of mine go for less than $800 or so. Good luck! 0
