1892 32-20 winchester

I was looking at the bore on a 32-20 around a 1909 year. As expected I found rifles all the way with some pitting but about 6 to 8 inches up the barrel from the cylinder there was a definate ring of what appeared to be some heavy pitting. What would cause that to happen?

  Breech rather than cylinder on a rifle. Was it under where the rear sight is located, on the barrel?

  Perhaps the flame temperature cooled enough at that distance for the mercury to plate out. Back then the primers were mercury fulminate.
