home defense
I know this subject has been covered before, but I can't find it. I'm only interested in firing my Walther PPS equiped with a laser and light, one time at somebody less than 15 feet from me, in a heavy jacket, coming into my bedroom in the middle of the night. I want his next stop to be the morgue. What round do I want?

I recently purchased a PMR-30. I am impressed with it. I am thinking about replacing the 1911 colt with it for night time home defense. Given the capacity of the PMR vs the knock down of the 1911 its more a less a toss up. Any suggestions on personal preference. And no I dont want both in my nightstand. Way too many grandkids. 0 -
I have no use for Glocks or 9mm. I do have 2 45ACP if that helps. 0 -
What size holes do you want to make? .355 or .452? The 19 in 9mm gives you more rounds in the magazine, the 30 in 45 gives you more power. I did a compromise and went with the Glock 23 in 40 S&W. 0 -
I have both, I shoot my 19 better than my 30. I may trade the 30 for another 19. 0 -
30 and your good to go[:)] 0 -

range, there is NO ANSWER to this question. Every aspect considered is a compromise. This subject has been debated extensively for a very long time. 0 -
Go to a gun range that rents out those Glocks and have a "Pepsi Challenge". Shoot both and which ever one you shoot better is the one to get. No sense buying one or the other if you can't hit anything. Also if they're close then get the heavier of the two to throw. 0 -

if you had to pick between the glock 19 or the 30 which is better for home defense
The 9mm vs .45ACP debate has been going on for 100 years, and will continue for another hundred years.
The answer is that both guns and both calibers are perfectly fine for home defense. You might as well ask which car is better for getting you to work. . .a Buick or a Chevy.
Whichever one *YOU* like better is the better choice. Period.
9mm will offer lower recoil, higher capacity, and lower per-round cost (perhaps letting you get in more practice on a fixed budget). .45 offers "bigger hole", and many authorities think that makes it the more effective round. Personally I'm skeptical that the difference is all that great; being of the opinion that where you put the bullet is *FAR* more important than which caliber it is, but see above about debate that's been going on for 100 years.
If you are going to choose 9mm for home defense, I'd strongly urge you to get a good 9mm +P "personal defense" round. The best of those have good modern bullets and come reasonably close to .357 magnum ballistics.

Since the thread topic is "home defense" my selection would be neither (although I like my Glock 36) but rather a 12g shotgun with 00Buck....much more lethal IMO for home defense.Yup, there is always some wise-acre who chooses "other". [;)] I'm actually a bit surprised we didn't have explicit calls for 1911s upthread here!
In seriousness, shotgun vs handgun for home defense, is another one of these never-ending debates that's been done 1000x before in a 1000 different places, with different authorities favoring one over the other for various reasons.
Without rehashing it again here, I'll just amplify what I said above. In *my* opinion, its the Indian, not the bow or arrow, that's important. Yes, there are differences, but most of them come down to personal preference and individual circumstance. [See here for some takes on shotgun vs handgun: http://forums.GunBroker.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=394363 http://forums.GunBroker.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=394564 ]
So long as your gun is of at least a moderately powerful caliber (or gauge), and reliable, then your personal proficiency with it is going to be a *LOT* more important than which exact caliber or platform. I or others may personally prefer something else, but Glock is a time-tested, popular, and reliable platform. If that's what you like, go for it.
By far, the most important things, are knowing WHEN to shoot, knowing WHERE to shoot, and then being able to hit the place that you're supposed to hit, *UNDER PRESSURE*. If you can do those things, then you can do good work with a 5-shot revolver, 1911, Glock, shotgun, AR-15, etc. If you cannot do those things, then it doesn't really matter which gun you've got.0 -
