    The marking PROOF TESTED followed by the gauge number was used on Stevens Arms & Tool Company made guns.

    I was thinking that as well, but IIRC most Stevens bolt guns had the brand name on the barrel also. Might be a really old Stevens, seem to remember the early guns having tapered barrel threads almost like a pipe thread would.
