will an 870 12 ga forend interchange with a standard size 20 gauge?

  Yes, but there's a gap around the barrel, and the forearm rocks side to side, causing extra wear and stress on the action bars. If it's all you got, I've glued shims on the insides of the barrel channel to compensate for it, on both an 870 and 1100.

  Remington has changed the shape of barrels, receivers, bolts, & fore ends on some/all 870's & 1100's. And, they don't tell you online or in their catalog what the changes are, likely because they failed to keep track of exactly what the changes are, or when they were made.
  
  So, the best answer is, "It depends."
