User name rules

Not sure if this is the place to ask but I tried to change my password without changing my user name and was told I my current user name could not be used because it is part of my email address. Been using it since day one. Have the rules changed at some point? Don't want to change it after all these years.

  This issue came up over on GD a few times. All of this stuff is way over my head, but I believe you can no longer make that type of change on your own.
