Your plan might work. Sound like slight wear on the lever or barrel notch.

Usually the barrel notch, from rotating the lever to lock the barrel in, without the barrel fully seated into the receiver. I lightly peened the notch back into shape and tightened it up. Usually doesn't take much to do it.

I tried the light peening but it didn't change a thing, of course I was probably not aggressive enough. I placed a .002 shim on the top of the barrel shank so all of the clearance would be downward and it will tighten up just as the lever hits the stop pin. I think the lock pin is bent because it gets pretty tight when the lever is straight up then loose as it is rotated and then just snugs up as it hits the pin. Since the pin is tapered and it threads to the left as it is rotated it seems to me that it should not get tight then loose as it rotates. BTW I did shoot it and it is accurate in spite of the very heavy trigger pull.
