1873 Winchester 1st Model Dust Cover

Did the first model 1873 dust cover have a tension spring like the 2nd and 3rd models? I've had two 1st models to look at and neither have a tension spring. There is a hole under the dust cover and wondered if something like a coil spring was used? Thanks for any help on this!
