More AR Lower Questions
In the other AR thread, I stated that I recently bought two lowers, and they are listed as "other" on the form. So I guess I can make pistols, or rifles on them, as I see fit? So can I make a pistol on one , then the next day, make a rifle on it? Just willy-nilly switch back and forth between rifle, and pistol? Sort of like wearing matching shoes with your outfit, whatever the mood of the day is?

What ever you decide to do? I wouldn't be blabing about it on the internet. Like the DIY silencer guys on U tube.[:D] Talk about Darwin award candidates. 0 -
Once you put a rifle/carbine stock on the lower, you can't go back. As noted, unless BATF knows you did so there are no other records. 0 -
if you have to register the unit asa pistol in your state than it is a pistol 0 -
Unless you can make your "Pistol" look like a Oly Arms pistol I wouldn't bother. I mean that buffer tube poking out the butt end kind a defeats the look of the pistol. 0 -

While this WAS true for many years, its currently NOT true.
Per the BATFE, you ARE allowed to take a pistol, convert it to a (non-NFA type) conventional rifle, then convert it back to a pistol again, if you so choose. Relevant ruling is here:
https://www.atf.gov/files/regulations-rulings/rulings/atf-rulings/atf-ruling-2011-4.pdf
Note that you CANNOT take something that started out as a rifle then convert it to a pistol. That creates a "short barreled rifle", which is an NFA item.
Now, while this doesn't really make a whole lot of sense, the situation is still quite a bit better than "once a rifle always a rifle".0
