The original M 57, as shown in the photo didn't have a manual safety.
To get them imported into the U.S., a aftermarket manual safety had to be added.
Many folks disassemble the 57's, and remove the manual safety assembly. And it's associated parts, to improve the trigger pull.

The safeties which were added to the M57 sometimes have improper internal cuts, which can interfere with the trigger pull by causing binding, and even prevent the trigger from being pulled at all when the safety is in the 'off' position.
Additionally, these safeties are poorly secured, being retained by the left grip panel, and often have short tumblers which are barely supported in the right side of the frame.
I discarded the safeties on my M57's, and made plugs. The plugs are cut on the top to be locked into position by the bottom of the hammer group (this prevents both sideways movement and rotational movement of the plug when the pistol is assembled). The front of the plugs are cut for trigger clearance. Essentially, the guns have been converted back to the original 'safety-less' configuration.
There are no other parts associated with this safety, so improvement of the trigger pull seems to be in hammer/sear relationships. I have been happy with the 'military-grade' pulls on these guns, so I haven't done it, but the usual cautions about maintaining proper angles and depths of engagement, apply.
I believe 9-round mags are still available from Widener's, if you can't find any on the auction side.
