Painted Arisaka Stocks?
I recently received a Arisaka Type 99 that has a painted stock. Was this ever done originally? It is a dark reddish brown color and it isn't on any of the metal - including the stock bolt. The paint appears to have been on there a long time.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Yeah, it's original. It's called orche or something like that. Poisonous to breath the dust or making it, can't remember which, but not harmful if you leave it alone. 0 -
Urushi is the name of this durable finish. Not a paint, near like a laquer, hard to obtain in the U.S., very hard to duplicate, so do not sand/strip, which will reduce original value anyhow.
And yes, nasty stuff in liquid or dust state.

Would need to see pics to evaluate what you have. 0 -
Thanks for your replies. This is not Urushi, definitely a paint. I have seen a similar finish on SKS's. I guess my question is still was this ever done at the factory? "Bubba" is always an option, but this is as clean as it gets. Not a bit on any metal part. I have never known Bubba to be so neat. 0 -
I think the Japanese Navy painted some rifles. Why I don't know. But it seems like I've seen some painted black. 0 -

Had one. Cast iron receiver, no rifling in barrel. Training rifle, only for blanks.0
