38 Colt - Ammo
One of my neighbors has a Colt Commander that he got from his dad, the barrel is marked "Colt 38". From the serial number the gun appears to have been made in 1930. Is it safe to shoot 38 special ammo in the gun, and is that what it was made to shoot?
I should have added its a revolver
Sorry guys I really screwed up the description on this gun. It is a 1930 Officers Model and reads on the barrel Colt D.A. 38
Thanks for any information

You need to post photos for us.
But, whatever it is, NO, he can't shoot .38 specials in it.

EDIT: So, are you saying it is a Colt Commando?0 -
If this is the pistol your inquiring about? NO.
.38 Super is a automatic pistol cartridge. Not in common use anymore. Pricy when you can even find it.

My first guess http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.38_Long_Colt
A later version WWII era was in 38 Special

Colt didn't make a Commander model revolver, during the 1930's time frame. The revolvers models they did make, were the Police Positive, Official Police and Detective Special. The Commando that they made during World War II, was a parkerized version of the Official Police. It was chambered for the .38 special cartridge 0 -
Charlimeyer007, your correct, I guess I need to put my glasses on when reading gun barrels. The gun you sent the link to is the one he has. Thanks
