38 Colt - Ammo

One of my neighbors has a Colt Commander that he got from his dad, the barrel is marked "Colt 38". From the serial number the gun appears to have been made in 1930. Is it safe to shoot 38 special ammo in the gun, and is that what it was made to shoot?

I should have added its a revolver

Sorry guys I really screwed up the description on this gun. It is a 1930 Officers Model and reads on the barrel Colt D.A. 38

  If this is the pistol your inquiring about? NO.

  Colt didn't make a Commander model revolver, during the 1930's time frame. The revolvers models they did make, were the Police Positive, Official Police and Detective Special. The Commando that they made during World War II, was a parkerized version of the Official Police. It was chambered for the .38 special cartridge

  Per the Bluebook of Gun Values: Colt Officer's Model (2nd issue), cal.38 Special, cylinder rotates clockwise, last patent date July 4, 1905. 3rd issue: similar to 2nd issue, last patent date Oct. 5, 1926.
