Barrel Chambering Question
I just bought a used McMillian Gold barrel in 6 X 47/222 Remington for a Remington 700. My intent is to hve it attached to a Rem 700 action. I already have a 6X47/222 RM rifle and ammo.
When the barrel arrived I dropped in a "virgin" resized case - dropped in nice & easy and stopped solidly against the shoulder. No "progressively tighter" just a nice easy drop in & solid stop. Here's my issue ....
Fully .3" of the case protrudes from the chamber. Seating the head of the protruding case into the Remington bolt - my expectation is the entire case would be surrounded by the barrel and the bolt, but that's not the case. Well above the web of the case is completely unsupported and would no doubt blow out when fired.
Is this normal, the chamber will have to be recut deeper so the entire case will be supported? I don't see that simply "screwing on" the barrel will work.

It's obvious that the used barrel is not chambered for the 6x47. It will have to be fitted to the action and bolt and then chambered with the correct reamer.
Just because a used barrel has been fitted to another M700 action, do not assume that the tenon and bolt nose recess will be correct for your action. Even factory barrels will usually require some fitting, some more than others. Seldom is it a case of simply screwing on the barrel.

It's stamped 6X47 (it's not the larger Lapua case) and other than coming up short in the chamber the 6X47 fits perfectly. Interesting though, I have a 6X45 and that is a perfect fit. I wonder if there's a "6X47 " case that carries the X45 shoulder placement of the 5.56 - and a 2mm longer neck?
Oh well, off to the gunsmith next week, see what to do.0 -
dfletcher,
Sometimes folks aren't as smart as they think they are... barrel markings can be misleading.
Cast the chamber and measure the cast carefully and accurately.

Could it be a 6mm X .222 Remington (Not Magnum)? The .222 max case length is 1.700 and the .222 Remington Magnum is 1.850. That's only half of your .30". Rather than guess, do as nn says and cast the chamber and proceed accordingly. 0 -

It's definitely not based on the 222. I guess it's Cerrosafe time.0 -
Figuring that there are 2.5mm/0.10", I am guessing that your barrel is a 6x42/222 Remington. Yes, the COL, would only make half of that, but you have to remember the bolt face is also recessed. You need to cast the chamber to be sure.

Hi Tim -
The case sinks way into the chamber on the 222, the shoulder is too far back. But now that you mention recessed bolt, that could be the case using the 222 Remington Magnum. If the bolt face is significantly recessed it would completely enclose and support the case. I suspect the gunsmith will readily know.0 -

The tenon of a barrel fitted for a Rem 700 action will have a recess for the bolt nose to fit in. The recess will be approx .700" in diameter and .150" deep. So, when a case is fully into the chamber it will be flush with the end of the tenon, or put another way, sticking out of the chamber about .150".
These dimensions are approximate only, which is why barrels have to be fitted to both the bolt and the receiver.

Understood, the diameter & depth you referenced re the tenon are what this barrel shows. Problem is, when a 6X47 case is inserted it protrudes from the chamber .410" and .260" above the tenon.0 -
Ever hear of a .222 1/2? And from that a 6x.222 1/2.
There are untold numbers of wildcats out there.
It looks like chamber cast and custom die time... or rechamber.0
