Removing medical adhesive tape residue
My friend has a pre-1900 Marlin 94 that had white medical tape wrapped around the forearm for many years. Dried adhesive residue is mostly down in the grain, wondering what might work to help remove it without damaging the patina on the wood. Anybody?

Rem Oil will disolve the glue, but getting the goo out of the grain might require some brushing. Soft toothbrush maybe. If the varnish on the wood has shrunk or turned black etc, the Rem Oil might dissolve it as well. No matter what you use, try a very small area first and proceed slowly until you are sure you'll get the desired result. It will not disturb undamaged varnish/shellac. 0 -
WD-40 also works.. Same caution, test first on the finish.. 0 -
Try ballistol or mineral oil, safe for wood, dissolves glue and then the fibers will loosen.
May take many applications.0 -
Ladies nail varnish remover.I forget the name of the ingredient in it that smells like kids candy. It will take the sticky tape mess off and then evaporate. 0 -
Nail polish remover is basically acetone--strong solvent--plus a little bit of oil to keep from drying the skin too much +smelly good stuff.
Goo Gone--at $stores etc-- works real good and is a safer product to
start off with.0 -
All kinds of solvents will take off that type of glue. . .probably including most normal gun cleaners.
The main thing is to make sure whatever you try won't remove the finish. Whatever you try, its probably wise to try it on a hidden/inside part of the normal stock finish first to make sure it doesn't take that off too.
If you've already used some gun cleaner on said gun, and know its safe on the stock, you might just start with that.
BTW, nail polish remover comes in two types: acetone, and ethyl acetate. Ethyl acetate has a characteristic fruity/pear-like scent. I think both of these would probably take off the adhesive, but acetone, in particular, may not be so friendly on the original finish, and that probably wouldn't be my first choice for this.0 -

Goo Gone is primarily naptha, which is also what good ol' Zippo lighter fluid is.0 -
mineral oil would be my first try. 0 -
I'd try heat first.
Heat gun and lots of cloth towels.
I'm a fan of mechanical before chemical.
If that doesn't sound appealing, goo gone and cross your fingers.0 -
Lemon Pledge spray and lots of rags. 0
