Fabrique Nationale 30-06 Ammo--Corrosive?
I have some military surplus Fabrique Nationale 30-06 ammo with a "55" headstamp. I've read most military ammo produced after 1953 is noncorrosive, but I've also seen some blog conversations alluding to this particular ammo being corrosive. One person said Fabrique Nationale ammo was corrosive up through the early 70s. Any opinions? Can anyone cite an on-line source that will confirm or deny whether or not this ammo is corrosive? I've looked, but can't find anything. Finally, I assume this is Berdan-primed ammo that's not reloadable, correct? Thanks in advance for any help.

That 1953 date applies ONLY to U. S. military ammo made at government ammo plants. 0 -
Even if corrosive there is nothing wrong with shooting it. Corrosive ammo causes no more harm in firing than non-corrosive ammo does. The primer residue contains salts that attract moisture. It is the moisture that causes the corrosion.
As long as you clean the bore after shooting you are fine. If you want additional insurance use Remington VORTEX, a black powder cleaning solution. It will remove the salts and prevent issues. Follow the vortex with any standard bore cleaner, I like Butches Bore Shine, and never worry about it.
My WAG is it is probably corrosive.0 -
It is likely to be corrosive. While it is technically possible to reload Berdan primed cases it is no where near as straight forward as decapping (removing the primer) from the US standard Boxer primed brass. 0 -
The FN55 ammo I've used was corrosive, and it is indeed Berdan primed. 0
