While a few Alaskans were furnished to the War Dept for evaluation, the only versions purchased by the US military (beginning October 1944) were M81 & M82 scopes. That's according to Peter Senich.

OK, but what was the reason for the prefix?

I checked a friends scope and it's an "A" prefix, but since I don't know of a pre A or a B prefix scope for comparison, I don't know what the differences would be- but if someone has a "B", I can get ahold of the "A" and post some pics for comparison.
