I have a Marlin 1895GS that I believe is of early production. does anybody know anything about marlin's serial number system and the start sequence?

Got the following off the net. I'm not sure of what your definition of early production is? I understood that the stainless guns, were made after 2000.

"after 2000 subtract the first two digits of the serial number from 2100, to get the year of manufacture".

this gun came from the gander mt headquarters in I believe early 2001. I was told it was an early production unit, and wanted to find out where marlin started their serial number production on these guns. the fit and finish is beautiful. it appears to be hand fitted.

So mine starts with 93 so by this 2100 mine was built in 2007. Still before Remington's "RemLin".

-1972

Marlin year of manufacture may be determined from the following table of letter/numeral prefixs to the serial number:

    Year | Prefix
c (Lower case "c")
C (Upper case "C")
D
E
F
G
H
J
K
L
M
N
P
R
S
T
U
V
W
Y, Z
AA
AB
AC
AD, 68
69
70
71
72

-2000
Starting in 1973, the year of manufacture can be determined by subtracting the first two digits of the serial number from 100:
    Example: SN 2512345 would have been made in 1975 [100 - 25 = 75].

    Year | Prefix
27
26
25
24
23
22
21
20
19
18
17
16
15
14
13
12
11
10
09
08
07
06
05
04
03
02
01
00

-Beyond

From 2001 on you can determine the manufacture year by subtracting the first two digits of the serial number from 100 and adding that to 2000.
    For example, SN 9112345 would have been made in 2009 [100 - 91 = 9 + 2000 = 2009].

Another way of figuring out the serial numbers/dates after 2000 is by simply subracting the first two digits from 2100.
    As in the above example: 2100 - 91 = 2009.

Guns made after 2000 will have serial numbers starting in "9" (until 2011 when they will most likely start in "8").

    Year | Prefix
99
98
97
96
95
94
93
92
91
90
