need some info
i am tring to rebuild a rem 788 that was in a fire barrel an action are fine stock was scortch. tirgger guard an clip was missing. was thinking to make it a single shot as i cant see buyn a trigger guard an clip for over a 100.00 for rifle that is not worth it. is it possable to put a regular trigger guard on an fill clip area with wood an use a regular folloer for shell. if so what type of trigger guard should i look for thanks mike

Hello to everyone.0 -
Not sure what you mean that it is not worth it. Depends on caliber somewhat but these bring $400-$500. 0 -
sorry what i ment is that with it being from in a fire n blueing shot stock burned how much money can be added to it before it is not pratical. it is a model 788 222cal. metal was tested for hardness an is safe foreend from frount swivel forward needs replaced, noblueing on barrel from same point is gone. needs re-crowned, sights, trigger guard an clip. butt plate all gone. justwant to try an safe what i have within a reasonable cost. 0 -
Just a thought, see if your insurance company will pay to restore it professionally......It is a desirable collectable rifle. 0 -
the insurance is limited to so much money for sports equipment an i decided to gt M1 an my 40x done instead along with my colt 45. seams lke most peple dont have enough to cover there firearms. i am filing paper work out for my NRA insurance too. but i lost 32 firearms to fire some only very little damages an others total loss. Only lost one that couldnt be found an that was a S&W 37 feather weight that was in dresser that was totaly burned up we thing it melted. Still searching for parts for rem 788 n win 250. right now. Fire was so hot in spots that operating rod on 1 M1 melted down
My advice is check you home owners insurance an make sure your covered. I been dealing with this for over 2 years0 -
If you want just a shooter, you might be able to get a stock for it from Boyd's. As for a magazine(your rifle does not have a clip, it has a magazine, and yes there is a dramatic difference), look on the auction side...one for a 223 might work also.
The metal, you might be able to send to Remington to get refinished.

I've been there. All mine were salvageable and I have been running them through a gunsmith's shop a couple at a time for about three years now.
I don't know where to find a REMINGTON trigger guard, but if you will remember, it is just a piece of stamped sheet metal. I think it was Rifle magazine that had an article about bending one from flat stock.
A friend has a .222 like yours. He never cared about shooting from the magazine, so he carved a block of wood to fill the well. It is flush on the bottom, easier to carry than with the protruding magazine. It is grooved on top to guide the round into the chamber, no separate follower needed.
You can have the barreled action bead blasted to remove rust and old blue, then Duracoat with a cheap airbrush.
If the stock is burnt at the tip bad enough, it could be cut off and a contrasting tip carved.
A lot of work but cheap if you do it yourself. If you can't, it is a parts gun, worth a good bit a piece at a time.0 -
hi yes it is a magazine not a clip sorry. the tip is burned about 1/8 deep was thinking of adding a tip or filing down coating with rezine an them paint it black an stain rest of stock. got all old finish off it as previouse owner coated it with polyuran. gun used to shoot likea dream with groups an just want to put it back for kids to useone ground hogs. so idont ealy need a repeater. just thought that another model of remington mght be close to it in size. 0 -
I have the same rifle in .222 also. My first centerfire rifle and a great shooter. 0
