Barrel Question for 1903 WWI Vintage Springfield
A friend of mine recently inherited a WWI vintage 1903 Springfield from his grandfather. He took it to a gunsmith to have it checked out. The gunsmith told him that the barrel needed re-sleeved or re-bored. Personally I'd opt to replace the barrel with either a brand new barrel or a good used barrel. Any constructive opinions would be appreciated - as always!

If it's in factory original condition. It might have substantial collectors value. Removing the original dated and proofed military barrel. Would have a negative effect on this value.
Post quality photos of the 03. Specially of the markings on the receiver and barrel.0 -
Thanks for the feedback! Yes - I'm aware of the collector's value concern. He really wants to shoot it. I'm thinking of suggesting to replace the barrel - but retain the old one if he wants to sell it down the road. He can switch the barrels out again if he needs to do so. I'll post some pics after he sends them to me.

Unless LATE WWI vintage, it will likely be a "low number" Springfield, which we are warned not to shoot anyhow. 0 -
Suggest you log on to cmpod and read up on the low number Springfields.
Many of them are still used, mostly in sporterized form, but it is better to be knowledgeable and then make your choice. Hawk was very wise to make this known. I didn't think of it.0
