Winchester 1400 problems

I took out my Winchester 1400 today and encountered problems. I gave it a fairly good cleaning last night, but I got tons of jams today. Sometimes the shell would eject and the other 2 would get wedged in and stuck up against each other. It took a key to press them apart and pop one in. Other times, it would stick and not eject and other times the slide would not even move back at all to eject the shot shell. I've had this happen before once in awhile, but today these things happened after almost every shot. If anybody could help me solve this, I would appreciate it.

It has been a long time since I work on one. I would start with the parts in the area of however you got the bolt to release when it would lock back. Close inspection of the working surfaces looking for wear or signs of a broken off little piece/tab. Dried grease could be blocking a recess area, perhaps a weak spring.

Wish I could be more help, but it is a hands on issue. For some unknown reason I can't pull up the owner's manual from Winchester or steves pages. Google Winchester 1400 manual, there is utube vid for disassembly.

    OK ,,,
I worked for Winchester ( back in the early 80's ) as a Gunnery Tech :
First problem is : Its a Winchester 1400 !!! the 'vega series' for winchester :
I could fix it : and Im not going to tell a NON-GUNSMITH "a.k.a. Home Bubba Fixit" how to try on-line !
Take it to a Real Gunsmith ( who knows winchesters ) and get it properly repaired !

    Good Luck !!!

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my question. I am new to this forum and I was just trying to get a little help on fixing a gun that my dad owned. I had a reply from an egotistical gunsmith/leo in Athens TN. that made me realize why only a few people like yourself are sincere and some just use the computer to berate others and brag about themselves. I would never do business with someone like that. Thank you again for helping me. quote:Originally posted by charliemeyer007

Thank you for your reply to my question. I have a Winchester 1400 that my dad gave me before he passed away and I was just trying to get it back in working order like it once was. I appreciate your vas knowledge of Winchesters, and your claim of being a "Real Gunsmith" is impressive. I will take your advice and get it repaired by a competent gunsmith. For all of your help I would like to return the favor with some feedback: 1. Your quote " I could fix it " normally would gat a response from me of " Do you have time to fix it now". 2. Your next quote of " I'm not going to tell a NON-GUINSMITH a.k.a. Home Bubba Fixit how to try online ! " implies that your business is so good that you don't have time to deal with anyone other than LEO's or gunsmiths that might value your personal opinion. 3. "Good Luck" sounds like no one else but you can make the repairs I need ! 4.Finally, as a "Home Bubba Fixit" that admits that maybe he can't repair it and wants to take it to a "Real Gunsmith" , I would choose one that answers my questions and wants my business over an arrogant forum junkie that likes to read what he types!!!!
    Good Luck,

Kim, The Winchester 1400 was the result of Winchester cheapening things up. They are difficult guns to work on. To try and type out the procedures for dis-assembly/re-assembly, would take a couple of pages. Getting it apart is one thing, getting it back together is a real PITA.
To make it more interesting, Winchester made some changes at serial number 400,000.
I'll take an educated guess, that your problem is the plastic throat and carrier release. The replacement parts are steel. If you contact MidWest and give them the serial number when you order, they can send the right parts you need.
An important tip on re-assembly. If you remove the bolt, be sure and use Loc-Tite on the cocking handle bridge screw threads when you re-assemble it.

Thank you for all of the information. I took the gun apart using a YouTube video that was extremely helpful. I have noticed that some changes were made for my gun s/n just like you said. Midwestgunworks is where I had originally planed to order the parts and a call to them found exactly what I needed and in stock. I'll let you know the outcome.
