Anschutz pre War Free Pistol Pictures
Thought I'd start a new thread, so more folks can answer questions.
Story is, at the end of the war, the allies confiscated all the German civilian arms, and destroyed them. A US Army doctor saw a tank running over a pile of civilian fire arms, and pulled this out of the pile before it was crushed. The pistol was in the holster that is pictured, the barrel is 14". The doctor had the box built by a local craftsman. Traded 2 packs of smokes and 2 chocolate bars for the box.
I need to know about when it was built, and a value. I have it on consignment, the owner wants a value before he has me list it on the auction side.
Thank you everyone, for your time and knowledge.
W.D.
Here is the link to the auction:

Don't know the value... but what a work of art. Thank you. 0 -
That looks like the Buechel Luna free pistol, made by Anschutz.
The full stock is unusual, though.
I am not too good at Internet Price is Right but will point out that in 1939 it was priced at $98.50 by Stoegers. A new Luger was $100, a S&W .357 was $80.
I doubt a free pistol has kept up with those vs inflation, but it isn't cheap.
I was going by the ad Rusty shows.
The 1939 Stoegers, available in reprint, is a handy reference. You could even pre-order a .38 Super P38.0 -
WoW WD that is great looking pistol. I have a much later one shot it in a couple of FREE Pistol matches but sort of boring . 60 shots in 60 Minutes. Please come back and post when you put it up for auction. I better not give value because I might Bid. But I will give him a carton of 10 packs of smokes and 10 bags of Hershey's Milk Chocolate Nuggets
5 times more than he gave

The German Proof Marks will give DOM. if Free Pistol was made after the early 1920's, when they changed their proofing regs.
HC, I was under the impression that this particular Anschutz's Free Pistols, were sold under the name of "Record" or "Rekord"?
There were a number of other Anschutz's in the gun business, in the same town. Maybe they also made Free Pistols.
EDIT #1,
Notice the length of of the wooden forend, in the Stoeger add.
I have never seen a free pistol with a full length one, such as yours? Makes me believe yours has been customised. To be used for hunting, rather than as a conventional free pistol. Check the rear portion of the grip. To see if there has been alterations, for a removeable shoulder stock.0 -
I posted in GD since I don't like to muddy up the ATE waters, but thought I'd post the scan here too for reference. This is from the 1940 Stoeger's catalog. It more closely resembles the Luna than the Record models.

Rusty,
Thanks for posting that, great help, and very interesting.
I listed it yesterday on the auction side. Got an email from a gentleman, asking about the barrel condition and about it being a C&R qualified piece.
I love firearms like this, they always provide a great history lesson.
Thanks again.

Rufe-Snow,
Nothing for shoulder stock. I've wondered about the long fore piece myself.
Karl,
I put the link to the auction in the first post, right on top of the first picture.
