I have 22 LR free pistol, brought back from Germany after WW2.
On the back of the action, is stamped U A over a Z in a shield. Research shows Udo Anschutz, is that correct?

My guess is that the "Z", represents the town of Zella-Mehlis Germany.
This is where the Anschutz's were located. There were quite a number of them in the gun business. Dating from the 19th Century, until 1945.
After the krauts lost the war. Zella-Mehlis was taken over by the Russians. As it was in there zone, in eastern Germany.
Some of the Anschutz's moved to West Germany. Where they restarted in the gun business, making excellent quality target rifles.0
