Replacing the Safety on a Mauser
There is a listing on the auction for an 1891 Argentine Mauser that has been sporterized. Bent bolt, drilled and tapped with a scope, modified the original stock.
This gun still has the original safety and it won't clear the scope.
How hard would it be to replace that safety? Can I do it myself? Could I just take the safety to a gunsmith, or better, mail it to a gunsmith and have the work done? What would it cost/

low scope safety by Maynard Buehler. This safety only fits the 1891 Argentine Mauser, it will not work with the 93,95 or 96. Went for $50 NIB. A DIY project if you are handy.

I'm not familiar with that specific Mauser, but the 98 variations with the safety mounted on the back of the bolt sleeve can be easily removed. With the action cocked, place the safety in the upright (firing pin blocked but bolt can be turned). Open the bolt and remove it from the rifle. Unscrew the3 bolt sleeve from the bolt, separating the bolt sleeve and firing pin from the bolt body. Then place the tip of the firing pin on a non-slip surface and push down on the bolt sleeve to release pressure on the safety. While holding the pressure of the firing pin spring, turn the firing pin 90 degrees. the firing pin will release from the bolt sleeve and can be allowed to pull straight out of the sleeve. Once clear, the sleeve and safety lever will be separate from e firing pin and the spring. The lever should be able to turn freely and to a notch where it can be pulled free of the sleeve. A different style safety lever may be placed in the sleeve and the entire process reversed to get back to an assembled bolt. The main thing to check when reassembled is that when the safety is in safe mode that it lifts the firing pin off of the sear. Otherwise the safety can be on, the trigger pulled, resulting in the firing pin moving forward until caught by the safety, but then regardless of what is done with the trigger, when the safety is released the gun will fire. 0 -
scope saft's are not 'plug & play', they do need some fitting at times. the m-91 scope saftys haven't been made for sveral years (unless some one starte making them again). an alternative is to replace the entire bolt shroud/firing pin assy. with one from a m-93/95 mauser and them fitting an aftrmarket safty for that model (these are available). 0
