Dating a Marlin

Looking to date an 1894s. Barrel has JM stamp, serial# 120188xx.

  You have to contact Remington to date a Remington built marlin.
  Serial number will start with MR
  Proof mark will be REP instead of JM on the barrel.

  Why on earth would you want to date an ugly old Marlin? Winchesters are much prettier, and easier to date[^]

  I guess you guys eyes have had your corneas burnt from glare- or have not seen a Marlin 36 or 39. Such the pity.
