Unusual Bayonet?
I came accross a bayonet (I think) It has a round cone shaped sheath. Inside is a spike - looks like a nail. Overall it is 10 1/2 inches, spike is 7 3/4 inches. No marks other than an impressed 'D". Has a mechanism for attaching to a rifle (or whatever).

Some good in focus pictures would help a lot. From the sticky above how to post a pic http://forums.GunBroker.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=259294
That's a nice site for pig stickers. thanks Hangfire Pic's of the Johnson's click on "Bayonet Identification" then "United States WWII"0 -
Photo is a little blurry, but are you describing a Johnson Bayonet and Scabbard?
A better photo from the interwebs:
In good shape, this is a $ 400.00+ item, depending upon how motivated the buyer may be.0 -
Everyone thinks the Enfield spike is just a quick, thrown together, war time expedient to put a pig sticker on the end of a rifle.
Actually, a lot of thought went into it. As I understand, actual measurements of an average person from skin to center of heart was added to the measured thickness of a Russian Soldiers winter clothing. The spike was made to that length.
If I recall, there were four versions of the Enfield spike, the first being extremely rare and having a quillion spike like that found on the French Lebel and the other three being slightly different in how the spike is attached to the lock mechanism. Then, after WWII a blade replaced the spike but with the same locking mechanism.
