    Given the construction of the SMLE I would think it could be an access point for the buttstock retaining bolt.

    As originally issued there would be a brass oiler that went into the trap first and then a rope pull-through with a brass weight. There is a proper method of looping the pull-through that allows it to fit properly and also leaves the brass weight right under the door of the butt trap.
