I have a Colt Python polished SS with a 8" barrel. The gun is NIB. all paper work, carrying case, the cylinder has never been rotated. I bought the gun in 1993. gun serial number is PY3985 My question is, what's it worth? Thanks, I appreciate any help...[:D]

    erniec, welcome to the forum.

The Colt Python especially the nickle plated ones are extremely desirable both by shooters & collectors. In recent years the prices have escalated to the point of being unafforable to many now, just as class 3 weapons have also done. It's about supply and demand. I attend live auctions very often (4 already this year), and am seeing more & more Colt snake guns (Pythons, Diamondback, Cobra, & now a lot of troopers). All of the auctions I attend are Absolute, no reserve, meaning the items will be sold to the highest bidder. Now with that said a seller may ask any price he wants, but the bidders will establish the value of an item. Advertising is your best asset. When you have a valuable item such as your Python, spend a few dollars more and make sure as many people as possible see it. Start the bidding at a penny and you will be amazed at how quickly it will climb. Start the bidding too high or with a reserve and you will only deter interest.

I wouldn't pay any attention to some fantasy asking price, from the auction. The actual fair market value can be ascertained, by checking the selling prices on the completed auctions.

That said. The prices of NIB Pythons have gone through the roof. If your description of your Python is accurate? Likely to be $2,500 to who knows how much? On a auction with multiple bidders.

I am original owner of a Colt Python 8" barrel E Nickel finish, SN K54715, never fired except for 3 factory test rounds. Have the original box albeit a little beat up. Purchased sometime in the 70's. Couldn't afford the ammo to shoot it then and certainly can't afford the ammo now. I have seen one similar for sale except it was listed as used @ $4,195. Am a little shocked, is this a realistic value for this gun?

This is the 38 Special "Target" Python, yes? I have one, bought new about 1980 or so and still sitting in the box. Never really used it much, I have a few friends out here (CA) wh perpetually bug me for it & offer mid $3K. Odd thing about the revolver is it was bought brand new from elsewhere in ME and although the barrel is stamped 38 Special the cylinder accepts 357 cases. I called Colt a few days after buying it and they told me to return the thing for a cylinder refit - which I never did. In my younger days I tempted fate and put some 357 rounds through it, but haven't done so for decades and won't again.

I don't know if $4K is possible, and CA prices tend to be high on "off roster" handguns, but it's sure a pretty good return on the about $400.00 or so spent 35 years ago.

The E Nickel finish is fairly rare. The price you mentioned is a little high, but only by a few hundred dollars. You have a gem.
