I have a Winchester model 1892 carbine in 38-40 cal. The serial No. indicates that it was made in 1894. Since I figure that this was a black powder era would this gun be safe to shoot with modern ammo.? The rifle seems to be in pretty good shape. I know it should be checked by a smith ect. I guess my question is would it be safe to shoot it with modern ammo if it passed that test.

What book do you have. Not questioning you just want to know a good source for accurate info.

The Red Book of Winchester values, 3rd edition, by Larry Shennum, and Bert Hartman. Look up the profile of Bert H, and e-mail him...he will help you out. This is the very best, and most accurate.

Here is a link to his profile...

    Hello ithaca4me,

If there is more you would like to know about your Model 1892 I will be glad to help. I own more than 3 dozen of these rifles and I am conducting a research survey on the model. You might want to take a look at this link which is a "Sticky" at the top of the Ask The Experts page. http://forums.GunBroker.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=606355

I would like to add your rifle into my work if I could. What caliber is it? Is it a sporting rifle or saddle ring carbine?

Mod1892 I do not mind if you look through my previous posts pictures of it are under berth don't mind all the little fuzziness I had just wiped it down. I will need to get one of Bert's books I guess. The only reason I was checking the manufacture date was I seen a nice colt saa bisley that is chambered in 32-20 and was made in 1910 but I guess I will have to look for one made in 1911.

Maybe the sellers info was just a little off, might be worth checking out.

    ithaca4me,

Thanks. I found the old thread about your rifle. I agree with your question in it about the stock being refinished. I would say yes, but would need a detail photo of each side of the upper tang and a side view of the top of the butt plate.

here are some more pics I did have my gunsmith take it apart and clean it because it was just filthy and I am not sure if he got it back together as tight as factory but I had no idea how to take one apart to clean I know he changed the forend cap screws (not happy) so I would like to find some originals.
