recently purchased a rem 700 223 from a friend--shoots good but primer cratering appears to be a problem with factory and reloads. primers crater .005 to .010in. some show some pressure problems. primer leaves some particles in bolt. any help?? or suggestions

First thing I would do is ask your friend if this is a recent problem or has been on-going. Nest thing I'd do is examine the bolt face with a magnifying glass and see if there are any clues. In any case, I wouldn't be shooting it until the problem was sorted out. 0 -

While it's certainly possible that your bolt/firing pin is creating some form of 'cratering', it's more than likely that you simply have an oversize firing pin hole creating the same visual appearance of cratering. 99% of the ti we find that it's the oversize hole...
Pictures of the effect on primers and critical measurement of the firing pin hole will tell the story.
If it is cratering from the oversize hole, you need to have the bolt bushed with a new and slightly smaller firing pin.

Magic marker the bullet really well in one of you loaded rounds. Chamber the round, then extract it. Look closely with a magnifying glass for scratches in the marking, maybe your rifle has a short throat.
Could very well be a poor fit of the firing pin in the bolt.
You don't have excessive build up of copper, molly or something else in the bore casing high pressures.0 -
Check the headspace.

Primer cratering usually means an oversize firing pin hole, or undersize firing pin nose. By itself, cratering is nothing to worry about. However, the little discs of brass can get inside your bolt and cause it to malfunction. It's called "blanking'. It's easy to take the bolt apart and clean them out, but a better solution is to use harder primers. CCIs usually do the trick but you may have to try a few different brands.

or someone MAY have tried to do a 'cheap' trigger job and lightened up the firing pin spring. 0 -
thanks for the information-will see if I can find a good smith to check the bolt out-- 0 -
Bore fouling If it has been shot a lot without proper cleaning can cause higher pressure on small bore rifles 0
