Sounds like a C.S. Shattuck single shot, does it open up using a ring in front of the trigger?

You should post some pic's (see sticky above for instructions) of the gun and perhaps what it is wrong with it as best you can tell - like a broken firing pin. Would be much faster than playing 20 questions.

Trade Brand Name" shotgun. Between about 1880 to 1940, there was a great interest in all things having to do with shotguns, designing, making, selling (especially selling) and of course shooting. Wholesale sporting goods dealers, retail chain stores and independent sellers (your local hardware store) wanted guns with names of their own choosing to sell. The major makers were only too happy to meet this demand. They would take one of their standard models and stamp almost any marking in the world on it as long as the order was large enough. Guns with the name IDEAL were made by one of two makers, either the Hopkins & Allen Arms Company of Norwich,CT (1866 to 1915) or the Iver Johnson Arms & Cycle Works of Fitchberg,MA (1871 TO 1993) for and were sold by either the Charles Williams Stores of New York City or the New York Sporting Goods stores, also of New York City. Based on your description, I would guess your gun was made by Hopkins & Allen. I have a Hopkins & Allen serial number-year made table and if you will post the serial number on the gun and a good description of all the markings, (a good well lighted and focused photograph would be nice) I can tell you when it was made.

There is nothing wrong with the metal parts it is the stock. I can fix it but had never heard of an Ideal so was trying to look it up. I will try and put a pic on here. It opens with a tang like most old shotguns. No rings.
It has the numbers 70048 on the wood and the barrel not a thing on the receiver.
