detecting refinished wood
on an old Winchester. Any good suggestions for clues to watch for on initial exams where there is no disassembly?

Proud fit , wood to metal. 0 -
Exactly what duckhunter said, look at the wood to metal fit.

I agree with duck hunter and W D However in case you are not familiar
with the term Proud when it comes to Wood . Factory wood most times is slightly oversize where it contacts the metal. when wood is Sanded to refinish it will be smaller than the metal where it joins up. also
Deep epoxy high gloss type finis does not belong on vintage wood0 -
The wood should fit tight to the upper tang and receiver. Look at these photos.

Thank you all. I'm hoping to look at a Winchester from the 30's this weekend and that is what prompted the question. 0 -
Skicat,
Take some photos of the wood and metal and send them to me, or post here. I will be glad to advise.

Thank you Michael. I appreciate the help. I just hope I get to see it. I found out about the gun late and am hoping it is still for sale. Will find out in the next couple of days. 0 -
Disappointing update. This was regarding a Winchester 42 circa 1936 listed on that other site. The price was too low and that's why I was figguring maybe it was refinished. I ended up turning them in as a scammer and getting their ads blocked. When it is too good to be true it usually isn't true.
Thank you for the help gentlemen.0
