side break shotgun
A friend of mine was telling me he has a shotgun that belonged to his great grandfather. He says it is a pump action and the barrel hinges open to the side. Never have seen or heard of one. Anyone shed any light on what it might be. I have not seen it yet to confirm what he says about it

Post some pic's after you get to see it. I once got to examine a double 32 bore that the barrels moved forward, then pivoted off to the left so it could loaded. Movement was supplied from and under lever, but a pump arm could have worked. It was one off built by a German watchmaker. 0 -
Not a pump, but there was a twist action single shot under the Rupertus name in Philadelphia long ago. 0 -
Could it be a Burgess?

As said, it's not a pump action if the the barrel(s) swing to the side. It's some form of a break open breech loader. There were several of this type shotguns made,. It's impossible to identify the gun with the information given. We need to know the markings on the gun on top oif the barrels and the lock plates. Look on the bottom of the barrels for any proof marks. English made guns will have crossed scepters or halberds while Belgian made guns will have the letters "ELG" in an oval. American made guns will have no proof marks. We need all the information possible including gauge, hammer or hammerless, barrel length or a very good well lighted focused photograph. 0 -
There are some double SxS and o/u that break to the side, not pump. And there are break open action but side open pump?? And if so would be a very poor concept . Perhaps he just saw a model 12 being assembled and assumed the barrel position was side open? We are waiting .....in anticipation. 0
