There should be some yellow shellac on the trigger adjustments, look carefully to see if the seal is disturbed. Your rifle is old and likely needs cleaned of old dried grease and crud then re-lubed.

I bought a rifle a while back (can't remember which one but not a 725) that had a trigger housing assembly like the 700, 725, etc. The entire assembly was packed with old grease or oil residue. I had to completely disassemble the trigger group, soak and scrub the parts in order to get the trigger to work right. I suspect you are dealing with a similar situation.

One thing you might try: with the rifle EMPTY; open the bolt, then push on the back of the trigger, then while maintaining pressure on the back of the trigger (pushing it forward), close the bolt and see if the sear catches the firing pin. If so, then it is very likely that a good cleaning and possibly replacement of the trigger return spring will fix it up.

Ray B, I have just tried what you said and that is exactly what happens. With forward pressure on the trigger the bolt stays in the cocked position. This maybe my problem. I will take it to a competent gunsmith and have it cleaned and the spring replaced if needed. Thanks everyone.
