1873 Winchester Part 2
Hello Steve,
We conversed via email earlier today about this rifle. Let me also point out that this gun was just for sale via a dealer in Missouri and listed on Guns International. Search their site with this item number. 100417763 The Guns Int link will not copy and paste correctly here.
And now, here it is on GB out in California by a dealer who has listed MANY questionable rifles in the past. Along with all of his marvelous cardboard boxes he just happens to have.

It was discuss also on the Winchester Collectors Forum in this thread:

You will notice several members there pointed out some problems with the rifle.
I smell a rat big time!!

Thanks for the help. Its funny how the rating on the blue went up from the listing on Guns interaional 40-50% barrel blue and 80% recever blue to now on GunBroker listing 95% pluse. I have several emails from him telling me its 100% original nothing at all messed with. I really dont know what to do Im a fool for taking his word
but im high bidder at this time and dont want to see anyone fall for this scam! He keeps falling back on the Cody letter on the barrel but heck the letter states worked on not new barrel. It my be fake too!0 -
I have watched this guy's auctions for a while, especially his pre 64 model 70s. A lot of them don't pass the smell test. His pictures are not of good quality or clarity, so it's hard to get a really good look at the gun. He post a lot of pictures, but, they are of poor quality and redundant.
The biggest give away on replacement Winchester barrels is two proof marks, instead of one. If it has two proof marks, it's a replacement barrel.
I have questioned him about some of his model 70s, his answers are vague, at best.
Proceed at your own risk.

It looks like somebody else has outbid you... you are off the hook, but now somebody else is going to get hosed. 0 -
If someone else takes the high bid, let them have it. This guy, misrepresents about 70% of his listings. I even saw a nice 1892, in what was supposed to be the wooden shipping crate...I asked for close ups of the crate, and he would not send them. Beware, as this guy...well as other's have told you too.
If you notice, the stocks, are, in my opinion, refinished. Care was taken to try to not go to overboard on the sanding, but they are slightly recessed in most area's. Most Winchester stocks are proud, meaning they are a little larger than the furniture.

Steve,
I am glad that you are "off the hook" as Bert says. Most of these auctions do not have a By It Now price so you have little risk in asking all the questions you want or need to BEFORE you start committing money to the deal. I have bought several rifles off of GB and have found the sellers to be fairly honest most of time. Also keep in mind that lots of these guys are far from experts about that which they are selling. Until you have a very good and well honed ability to know what is correct for any certain rifle model and time period it is always a good idea to take what the sellers says with some degree of skepticism. Ask your questions here or on the Winchester Arms Collectors forum.

I contacted him using his own words against him. Pretty much told him to bump me using one of his fake user names and with in the hour he did. At least I'm hoping that's what happened. When I did ask about all the misleading crap he said "no problem just don't pay him and he will relist it. "No big deal" he would leave no bad feed back. I told him if I end up with the bid I will buy the gun. But didn't think he wanted me to have it in my possession. Along with the long list of emailed between the two of us! It worked out I'm very thankful for all the help from you guys. I love these old guns I own a few and have never been misled until now. But Iv only bought from people Iv known and fist hand. I now see clearly the dangers of the online game. But its so dang tempting!! I get on here and I'm truly a kid in a candy store! Thanks again!! 0 -
woma951,
If you see something you like on the auction side, or any place else for that matter, it never hurts to come here and ask. I have found, you will always be better off asking questions here than not.
As an aside, we have some of the best Winchester, and Colt experts in the world...yes, the world, right here in the Experts forum. You might ask Bert H, how to get a copy of his co-authored Red Book. It is re-writing the reference standards for Winchester. If you continue on your path, you will need it.
