1873 winchester
I picked up a 1873 32 20 here a while back that is a good solid brown and the only bad pitting I have is from about the end of the front sight pretty much all around the barrel to the end of the barrel. A couple of them are pretty deep and I was wonder if there is a product that could be used that would would take a brown/blue, and not look like a fill in. Or just forget it and say it's over a 100 years old.

I have a 1873 winchester 32 20 that was missing the ejector. I guess the new parts are made to work in more than one caliber and they have to be dressed a bit. Since i didn't have one in the gun I am not sure of the fit. I got it trimmed down enough to fit the pin hole and the ejector is pretty tight in the grove. What I am wondering is if it should stay down in the grove fair tight or should it be able to rock up just a little. Give the bolt has a bit of slant in the rear where the hole is I would think it maybe should fit loose enough to lift out of the slot when the ejection takes place. I might have to take a little more of the area around the pin so the ejector can move. can anybody tell me how the ejector should work? 0 -
It would be best if you could post quality close-up photos of the 73 and the letter. For accurate identification and valuation.
With the advent of computers and laser printers. All the various types of authentication documentation, is suspect as far as I'm concerned.
Instructions for posting photos, at this link.

Hello Woma951,
The replaced barrel, even though apparently done by Winchester, will negatively affect the collector value of the rifle now and in the future. How do you know the barrel replacement was done by Winchester? Are the barrel and receiver proof stamped?

Mod 1892 that's a great question I dint look? The only way I know is threw an email conversation with the owner he claims it was put on by Winchester. The Cody letter only states a repair had been made.
Rufe-snow will that email work?0 -

This forum requires that photos to be posted, use a online photo hosting site. The photos won't work if you attempt to transfer them directly from your computers hard drive. As outlined in the link I provided in my first post.
I don't know if it's possible to transfer photos you received as a attachment in your e-mail? To a online photo hosting site, so that they can be viewed on this forum.0 -
Steve,
Sellers trying to unload a Winchester that does not letter will tell you almost any story under the sun to get rid of the gun. Always buy the gun, not the story!
With that stated, there is a way to determine if the barrel was actually replaced by Winchester when it was returned in 1905. It will require some disassembly to prove (or disprove) if it was a factory replacement, but it is well worth the time and effort to do so. You will have to convince the seller that he needs to remove the magazine tube and forend stock so that you can check the bottom of the barrel for a specific marking.
If it turns out that the barrel was replaced by Winchester (and can be proven by having the appropriate markings on it), the collector value will not be degraded by any appreciable amount.
I do not want to divulge what those markings should be on an open forum for all to read, as it only makes it easier for the dishonest people to learn the secrets needed to make it very difficult to detect non-factory altered Winchesters. If you are serious about acquiring the rifle, and the seller is willing to take it apart to photograph the markings on the bottom of the barrel, contact me via a PM.0 -
Would Winchester have proof marked the barrel when it was replaced? 0 -
Yes, that's what is on the bottom of the barrel. They can be faked, so Bert would need a pic of it. 0 -

Not necessarily, especially if it was in the early part of the year 1905 (or earlier).0 -

No, that is not what is on the bottom of the barrel. The markings I am looking for are not proof marks.0
