    Maybe. I think that by design some needs to be there so the cylinder can rotate down into position.

    It depends whether there is a cylinder lock notch or the cylinder is held in place against a stop by the hand.
    If it is the later, a new longer hand is necessary.
    You need to tell us what make and model revolver you have.

    By "end shake" you mean front & back, not side to side - correct? It seems to me that shimming the front ought to be possible, so long as the cylinder can be removed and a shim dropped in place.

    The problem with shimming from the front is that it usually increases the cylinder to barrel gap to an unacceptable level.
