Peep Sight Screws
Hello Again,
What is the technical name for the type of mounting screws used for receiver peep sights? Did Lyman and Redfield make sizes unattainable on the regular market? They look like #6x48 but the head O.D. is smaller and a tad shallower. Thank you.
Jim

You probably need #6-48 screws with a fillister head. I have had to chuck screws in a drill and spin them down with a file to get the heads to fit inside a sight hole counterbore. 0 -
Somewhere I read that the threads on the 6-48 screws that mounted the Lyman 48 were different. As I recall they were not just v shaped threads but somewhat like the barrel threads on a 1903 Springfield. They were identified by some name I identify with Great Britain. Maybe it was Birmingham. Some machinist might be able to help here. 0 -
We need to keep in mind that these screws fit into holes drilled and tapped by Winchester, Marlin, Savage, Colt, etc., etc.
These same holes would also accept sights from Redfield, Lyman and others.
Having replaced these screws on many occasions with standard 6-48's out of my Brownells assortment, only needing to slightly reduce the head diameter, I am pretty confident that the holes are standard AN pattern 60 degree V form threads, or 6-48NS.0 -
I think the heads are smaller and both sides are cut square. 0 -
Thanks for all the input. 0
