2 1/2" shotgun shells
Is it ok to shoot 2 1/2" shells in a barrel marked 2 3/4"- 3" shells? Thanks

What type/model shotgun, are you referring to? 0 -
Generally, yes; unless you have the kind of trick question that Rufe imagines. 0 -
Why would you want to? 2 1/2" shells are rare. New ones are very expensive, old ones are "Keepers" 0 -
Unfired 12ga are less then 2 1/2 fired are 2 3/4 I have had this asked to me before by new shooters.
Marking on gun refers to fired length of hull0 -
Shorter is okay, only feeding troubles may happen in semi and pump guns.
here are some very popular "new" short shells that allow more capacity
in tube feed guns.

2 1/2" shells are not rare where I live, did not notice they were 2 1/2" when I bought them but have 2 new boxes that I bought about 2-3 months ago. 0 -
Think 2 1/2" .410 shells in a 3" .410. Obviously no problem. 0 -
I've been extending the life on shotgun hulls by cutting off the
crimp and reloading them with a rolled crimp for years. They
generally run 2 3/8 to 2 1/5 inches when I'm done. I shoot them in
a pump or SxS without any problems at all.0 -
I have seen no issues with shooting shorter shells. Feeding might be a issue, make sure you clean the chamber to prevent extraction issues with full length shells. 0 -
As mentioned, you will likely have to clean the additional carbon from the chamber.
The only real issue may be blown patterns if they are a fiber wad load rather than plastic wad with a gas seal. Pattern a few and see how they do.0
