I's a smoothbore fowler, not a rifle.
There might be proofmarks underside of barrel, but would be difficult to drive out the pins holding it to stock without some damage.
And it has an American look to me. Can't read name on the lock, but many gunsmiths used ready-made locks.0 -
My impression is this is a homemade piece made with various old / original musket and rifle parts. Probably made bertween 1930 and 1965; possibly in the late 1800's. Ashmore was an English lockmaker and a major supplier to the U.S. in the 1800's. It is common to fine Asmore locks on old muzzle loading rifles. This piece is not a copy of anything original, just a put-together muzzle loader of medium quality at best.
I agree it is a fowling piece (shotgun). The rings on the barrel indicate a civilian manufacture, not military. The marking on the end of the barrel suggest a European manufacture to me.0 -
It's a percussion shotgun with a back action lock. This type of lock would date to the late percussion era probably 1850's/1860's?.
No offense, but it's of rather crude manufacture. It't might be homemade, or by the village blacksmith?
The markings on the lockplate might not be a indication of the actual manufacturer? It might have be purchased, or salvaged from another firearm.
The marking on the left side of the barrel is quite unique. I have never seen barrels marked in that location previously. Or that type of marking.
"94" doesn't appear to be a date? As 1894 would likely be to late for this type of percussion shotgun. Unless it comes from Appalachia?
