On the left side of the action, in the back, there is a little tab you have to push down, then the bolt will slide right out. It is kind of oval/triangular shaped.

It is not like the 77MK-II's, like grasshopper mentioned.

BTW...that rifle/cartridge combination, is one deer killing machine!

    EDIT 1

No, I meant deer killing machine, not squirrel.

Yes, any one with the knowledge of the vitals, and anatomy of a deer, can easily dispatch a deer out to 125 yards. As far as I know, it is legal in 7 states for hunting, and in several more for crop destruction management, especially in populated area's.

A 34 grain Winchester Supreme behind the shoulder in the lungs, will drop the deer within 30 yards, and a shot to the brain will drop it instantly.

It is not for deer driving, or the un-ethical, who are unwilling to wait for a good shot. But, then again, a 500 Whiz BANG!, will work about the same for poor marksmanship.

    EDIT 2

In the great Hitleristic state of NY, ANY centerfire chambering, is legal for deer, including the lowly 25 ACP. I do believe that the qualifying statement I made, is that "It is not for deer driving, or the un-ethical". I would presume that would include unlawful purposes, like poaching, as well.

I have seen legal use of the 22 WMR, and 17 HMR to control apple crop/tree destruction. I have also, myself, legally used a 17 CCM, and a 17 Fireball to harvest full mature whitetail bucks, without doing a melon shot. Properly placed in the CNS, or vitals, it is all over, and just as fast as being shot with a 300 Winchester Magnum.

Ruger will probably provide you with a manual.
Regarding the 22mag as a "deer killing machine". It MIGHT be in specific instances but is NOT considered to sufficiently powerful for general(or even legal) use.

The gun instruction manual from Ruger details how to press the bolt stop to release the bolt for cleaning/maintenance, including picture, on page 7:

Perhaps you meant "squirrel killing machine"?

Yes, it certainly possible to take deer with .22 magnums assuming you're able to place the shot correctly, but hunting deer with .22 rimfire is illegal in almost all of the USA under most circumstances.

Even if legal, its questionably ethical, because the margin for error in shot placement with this low power round is fairly low.

EDIT: To be clear, pest management of deers obviously involves killing them, but this is not the same as "hunting" and its sort of a special situation that rarely if ever applies to members of the general public. Consequently all sorts of harvesting practices not typically legal or considered ethical for hunting are employable in that context (eg baiting, infrared optics, laser sights, use of underpowered rimfire ammo, high cap semi-auto weapons, etc).

On true hunting, people hunt deer successfully with recurve bows, and even spears, and I think its reasonable to compare something like a .22 magnum to those other weapons. If you're a skilled enough hunter that you can get in close, take only disciplined shots and precisely control them, then yes, you can do this, and clearly there are some who can. Its not a bad thing to know HOW to do (eg for a survival situation) even if you don't actually do it.

But the point is, for anyone reading this who thinks they can take their favorite .22 magnum hunting next season, or is thinking about buying one for that purpose, with a high degree of likelihood, that's simply not legal.

In the specific case of the original poster, he lists his location as Oregon. With the exception of squirrels, it is illegal to hunt any game animal with rimfire ammo in the State of Oregon, period. So for him, its probably better NOT to think of a .22 magnum as a "deer killing machine", but maybe as a "squirrel killing machine"!

.22 magnum for deer is for poachers.
Sorry but that's a fact around here.

Thanks guys! I thought that was it but couldn't get it to work. I pushed down really hard and got the bolt out. Found that there was a bunch of hard grease stuck in there. Works great now.
