Win. Model 70 Question Picture added
I have seen some pictures of a Model 70 chambered in 300 Win. Can a knowledgeable person tell by pictures if it's a pre '64? Also the guy states that the barrel is stamped: "rechambered 300win mag". Could that be something that was sent back to Winchester and done? Would a rifle like that "Letter"?
TIA for any help.
Edit:
Ok I contacted the guy and asked for the s/n, and a close up picture of the barrel stamping. s/n is 140311. Here is what the guy writes about the rifle: "Original 300 magnum....barrel is stamped rechambered 300win mag
very good condition" Pic below.

All you need is the serial number. If it's over 700,000, it's post 64. 0 -
In answer to your question... quote:the barrel is stamped: "rechambered 300win mag". Could that be something that was sent back to Winchester and done?
Yes, but very unlikely. Winchester would have simply replaced the barrel instead of rechambering it.
In answer to your second question... quote:Would a rifle like that "Letter"?
No. Cody does not have any of the records for the Model 70.0 -
Also look for the big claw extractor. This was eliminated in the 1964 design change, and not reintroduced until many years later.
NO WAY that rechambered & remarked Win Mag is factory work.
No letters available on model 70's.0 -
Great, thanks guys. I'm going to attempt to contact the owner and get a s/n, and see if he can explain the chamber stamping a little better. 0 -
1st off, rechambered / buggered up pre 64 model 70's are common.
I would not even consider the rifle. If you do, find out if it was originally a 30-06 or .300 H&H barrel. If it was an '06, then it's also had the bolt face and extractor worked on. If a H&H, then it has a lot of extra freebore.
Original barrels are not hard to find....
That looks like an original barrel stamp to me. It's a 300 H&H Magnum.0 -
The post 64's will have a plugged hole in front of the trigger assembly on the stock. Sometime it's a little bit different in color, from the stock. GOOD LUCK!!! 0 -
Last pre-64/64's serial number is 581471 according to Madis. I have only seen a few pre-64/64's in 300 H&H Mag not one in 300 Win Mag. The post 64's serial numbers begin at 700000. Also, according to Speer Vol #10 the 300 Win Mag was announced in 1963.
Hope this helps You.0 -
I think the 300 H & H MAGNUM was marked that way. I don't see rechambered 300win mag in the pic. 0 -
That's how the 300 H&H was stamped in those days, because it was the only factory 300 magnum. If it's now chambered for 300 Win Mag, it's had a reamer run into the chamber, but since the H&H was longer the gunsmith either took a few turns off of the back of the barrel, or there's a significant amount of throat. My guess is the owner just thinks it's a Win Mag. 0 -
There where 4,916 pre 64 model 70s built. There are more fakes out there than real ones.
The rifle in question is, or was a 300H&H magnum. I have one marked the same way. Until 1963, the 300H&H was the only 300 magnum Winchester produced.
Randy, if it where me, I'd get a chamber cast, that will tell the story.
