I'm interested in knowing why it makes any difference.

Atchison type 22LR AR conversions/uppers function correctly with a rounded hammer not the notched styled hammer. There is a definite reason why but I haven't experienced the problem with my older Olympic Arms, the only AR I have, which has the rounded hammer. The Atchison Chiappa GenII 22LR upper functions perfectly with it.

Thanks, guess I learned something. As luck would have it, my Chiappa got put on a lower that just happened to have a rounded hammer.

I have the Chiappa M4 22LR upper GenII. It has a more solid block in the rear where the recoil spring guide rod is attached compared to their earlier model. Read a lot about the problems with the earlier model and their resolutions. When mine arrived from CDNN, I noticed the rifling was a little rough and the zinc wash or whatever that finish is on the bolt was very uneven. Did the following:
    1. flitzed chamber and rifling using ox-yoke jag with their butterfly patches
    2. polished the guide/center feed rails on the bolt bottom
    3. trued and polished the bolt face
    4. shortened the firing pin and beveled/polished sharp front edges
    5. adjusted the extractor to snap on/hold better
    6. reamed/polished the firing pin tunnel
    7. cleaned/lubricated

Tested it out with Win Super X, Fiocchi, Wolf Match, Federal American, etc. no failures to feed/cycle/fire; and accurate with the Wolf Match until it got real dirty. Noticed that bolt is definitely softer than the barrel extension and it took a hammering at the bolt face.

    I didn't go that far.
1: Took it(Chiappa 22 lr upper) out of box.
2: Looked like it was cheap throw away part.
3: Pulled the bolt, cleaned the barrel and lubed the bolt.
4: Mounted cheap red dot optic and sighted in-shot pretty good for
    throw away part.
5: Kids were here and shot the snot out of it.
6: Cleaned bore and relubed bolt and ready to go again.
I can't say how long the thing will last and I'm not going to get too rough with it, but it does have some merit as a training tool.

Well, it looks like I will never find out what type of hammer the NatMil AR-15 lower uses. Since, I never received the complete AR-15 lower I won on 11 February 2014 even though they marked it as paid for, FFL received, and item shipped. Now, they are no longer registered as a GB user.

Appears a few of those NatMil complete AR-15 Mil-Spec lowers are slowly dribbling in to their GB auction winners. Maybe I'll finally be able to find out what hammer type their lower uses or find out the joke is still on me. [V]

Today, after 37 days of waiting, I received a Technical Grinding and Machining Multi Caliber AR lower from NatMil. There is no NatMil logo on it and it came with a round hammer not a notched one. Thus, I still have no idea what type hammer a NatMil lower uses but from further reading it appears the notched hammer was a Colt idea to prevent doubling due to hammer crawl (not certain if this is the right term). Essentially, the notched hammer caused the hammer to lock with firing pin and carter pin of the bolt carrier group (BCG) and prevented the hammer crawling forward with the BCG. Not all AR manufacturers followed the Colt lead with the notched hammer. Anyway, the TGM AR lower appears to be well made and fits tighter with the Chiappa upper than Olympic Arms lower did maybe a little too tight.
